Two articles in this issue of BioScience illustrate the power of new molecular techniques to give wings to very different types of biology. Both articles discuss, in part, how information from genetic sequences might guide urgently needed planetary ecological management. In the article that begins on page 745, Christopher W.

In the Forum article that begins on page 699, Stephen R. Carpenter and 18 distinguished coauthors argue for a national program focusing on synthesis in environmental sciences. This influential group, representing an array of specialties, argues that ecologists and scientists in closely connected disciplines—the biological, computational, atmospheric, hydrological, geological, oceanic, and social sciences—can, by working together better, accelerate discovery and research in basic and applied environmental science

Latches are a type of mechanical fastener which are used to join at least two objects (or surfaces) together but which will allow easy separation of the objects when required. They are not at all the same at a “locking device” which allows greater security in controlling the separation of the objects. Locks usually use a key which can be mechanical or electronic in order to separate the surfaces or objects. Hinges on the other hand are a permanent and fixed joining of two surfaces.
The latch usually employs another component which is fixed to the other object or surface and depending on the design or type of latch this other component can be known as a “keeper or “strike”.
Common latches range in complexity from the one piece flat spring of plastic or metal like those commonly used to snap shut those moulded containers for power tools and various tool boxes to the more complex multi-point cam latches which are commonly used for keeping large doors closed.
Here are just a few examples of various latch styles in use today
This latch uses a spring and is activated by shutting or “slamming” the door and like all the other latch designs; its purpose is to hold the door closed. It derives this common name by its ability it withstand damage when the door or drawer is “slammed” shut and is therefore by default a rugged device ideal agricultural, construction and industrial applications.
Cam locks are a style of latch which is made up of a base component and a “cam” from which the name derives. The base is the component where the key or opener is used to rotate the cam which is the actual latching device. These cams can be straight or offset which are often reversible.
The Norfolk latch was first seen in the early 19th century and originated in Norfolk an English county. It incorporates a simple thumb actuated lever and is mostly associated with holding wooden gates and doors closed. The Norfolk latch handle is fitted to a back plate which is independent of the thumb piece.
The Suffolk latch was first seen in the 16th century continuing through to the 19th century and as its name suggests originated in Suffolk an English county. It incorporates a simple thumb actuated lever and is mostly associated with holding wooden gates and doors closed. Their lack of a back plate made them different from the neighbouring Norfolk latch which superseded it when it came into being in the early 19th century
